Underground Storage Tank Cases
Through the use of underground storage tanks at service stations, certain oil companies allowed harmful components of gasoline (e.g. benzene, toluene, and lead) to leech in the soil for years en route to subterranean water supplies used for human consumption. We prosecuted the major oil companies for violating Proposition 65. The case generated widespread interest, garnering support from both the Office of the Attorney General and the Environmental Law Foundation. After 10 years of persistence in litigation, our enforcement action resulted in the massive environmental cleanup of numerous sites, preventing further toxification of California’s precious groundwater.
